Sh2 - 101 Tulip Nebula
Sharpless 101 (Sh2-101) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It is sometimes called the Tulip Nebula because it appears to resemble the outline of a tulip. Ultraviolet radiation from the young energetic stars at the edge of the Cygnus OB3 Association, including the O star HDE227018, ionizes the atoms and powers the emission from the nebula. HDE227018 is the star that is encapsulated in the OIII bubble just right of center in the image. At about 70 lightyears across the complex, the beautiful Tulip Nebula blooms about 8000 lightyears from Earth. The Tulip Nebula was catalogued by astronomer Stewart Sharpless in his 1959 catalog of nebulae.
